Name: Spay it Forward
When: February 1 to February 28, 2022
Where: Online
Why: To support our local partners in spaying/neutering canines
Did you know that a single unaltered female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies over 6 years? (Peta 2020) That’s a staggering number, especially when it’s estimated that there are already hundreds of millions of stray dogs worldwide, suffering and lacking the basic needs to survive.
In Canada alone:
• Approximately 700,000 animals are currently waiting to be adopted at animal shelters across Canada. According to Humane Canada, there are many animals that need homes (updated as of January 10th, 2022)
• shelters took in over 105,000 companion animals in 2019 (not including local rescues)
• overpopulation plays a factor in euthanizing dogs in shelters
• less than 50% of the dogs in shelters will be rehomed
• northern communities struggle with dog overpopulation
• many dogs freeze to death during the winter months
February is a month during which most of us celebrate love. February also happens to be Spay & Neuter Awareness Month. To us, love comes in the form of helping prevent dogs from entering lives full of fear, pain, and suffering by managing their overpopulation. Celebrate with us by Spay(ing) It Forward.
This year we aim to:
• raise $11,000, which SOS will match dollar-for-dollar
• spay/neuter 220 Canadian dogs
• help reduce the overpopulation of dogs by 14,740,000
Spay It Forward is about educating on the importance of spaying/neutering our pets while also raising funds for more surgeries, reducing overpopulation and unwanted animals.
We invite you to be part of the change with us!
